FEST REVIEW Columbia: The tragic loss The first Israeli astronaut, Ilan Ramon, honored all Jews with his mission on the Columbia space shuttle two years ago. In “Columbia: The Tragic Loss,” we join Ramon as he sees a world without borders – as described in “Imagine,” one of his favorite songs. But we all know how the mission ended. “Columbia,” an investigative documentary made for Israeli TV, explains what happened. We share the events of the flight through family interviews, Ilan Ramon’s intimate e-mails, video-phone communications with his family and his hand-written diary, which was miraculously recovered. Dramatic tension is built as videos of the frolicking weightless astronauts are juxtaposed with interviews with NASA employees, who investigated the shuttle’s damage during the mission. The Jewish people are like a family. It’s important to re-count the details when a relative dies and share in the sorrow. “Columbia: The Tragic Loss” does this superbly. by Linda Elyad |
